Oh, the lowly Integra. Here we have a vehicle that is highly capable, comfortable, spacious, lithe, and a genuinely quick compact luxury hatchback. It all adds up to a vehicle that should be an absolute "no-brainer" for any enthusiast, or really anyone with an actual heartbeat. Unfortunately, the little old A-Spec "Teggy" gets completely overwhelmed and overshadowed by its high-performance sibling, the Type S. The Type S is so good that it acts like a black hole to the standard Integra, pulling all of the attention and praise into its orbit. Barely any thought is given to the "standard" Teggy, and that is a genuine shame.

Because the standard Teggy is not just good—it’s effing fantastic. Honestly, if you use your brain, the A-Spec with the six-speed manual transmission is the thinking man’s Type S. Or at least the choice for anyone who can do basic math. As much as I adore the Type S—and believe me, I would do some highly questionable things to get one—asking nearly $54,000 for it is a hard pill to swallow. Which is just another way of saying: it’s freakin' expensive, man.

But for only $39,200—which is a massive $14,700 savings over the Type S—you get 90% of the performance with athleticism you can actually use every day. To paraphrase my journalistic hero, James May: "driving a slow car fast is infinitely more fun than driving a fast car slow." Do you know why? It’s the classic Miata equation. You can maximize this vehicle's potential on a daily basis without the constant, lingering fear of losing your license. You can wring out every snickety, mechanically beautiful gear, and you can dive-bomb into corners with total abandon. In other words, you can fully enjoy the car every single day without the anxiety of peeking in your rearview mirror every other second.

Beauty of a Manual

One of the best manual transmissions ever made, mated to a silky smooth clutch and world’s best auto rev matching system. This entire package is just utterly superb, fantastic and technological brilliant.

The reason why is simple. Most of the fundamental awesomeness of the Type S can be found right here in the A-Spec Integra. You want a true mechanical limited-slip differential? The manual A-Spec has it. You want an adaptive suspension system? Yup, it has that too. You want that tactile mechanical symphony that is a six-speed manual with automatic rev-matching? Oh yeah, the A-Spec's got it. Yes, you miss out on the Brembo brakes, the wider suspension knuckles, the aggressive bucket seats, extra cooling, and the flared aero of the Type S. For everyday driving, you may want all of that racing hardware, but you don't really need it. Plus, the beauty of the aftermarket is that you can easily bridge that gap yourself over time.

What you do get in the A-Spec is a car that strikes a sublime balance for the real world. The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine delivers its torque early in the rev range, making the car feel punchy and incredibly eager. It loves to be revved out, and unlike the thirsty Type S, it sips fuel to the tune of an impressive 30 mpg combined.

Because you have to opt for the Technology Package to unlock that brilliant manual gearbox, you are also treated to a premium cabin. The 16-speaker ELS Studio 3D audio system is a masterpiece, and the liftback cargo utility easily swallows luggage, groceries, or outdoor gear.

Heck, the only thing I don’t like this the color matched grill. Don’t get me wrong, I love the DESIGN of the grille but coloring matching it to the. body, just looks ‘off’ to me. But looks are in the eye the beholder.

Ultimately, the Integra A-Spec Manual is the sweet spot of the entire Acura lineup. It is the spiritual successor to the lightweight, tactile, and highly practical Japanese sport compacts of the golden era. Let the rest of the world obsess over the Type S; the real enthusiasts know the smartest play is the one that leaves nearly fifteen grand in your bank account.
